Politico says "Ivanka and Jared's big move has D.C.'s Jews buzzing."

Buzzing, eh?

That had me thinking...
The land of buzzing wings is as good as dead,
the one beyond the rivers of Cush,
that sends messengers by sea,
who glide over the water’s surface in boats made of papyrus.
Go, you swift messengers,
to a nation of tall, smooth-skinned people,
to a people that are feared far and wide,
to a nation strong and victorious,
whose land rivers divide....
That's Isaiah 18, and I think it's about Ethiopia, not the United States. Read the whole thing. It's scary!

Anyway, as Politico has it, the Jews of D.C. are "buzzing" over which Orthodox community Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump will join.
The community is buzzing over all the potentially awkward scenarios that Ivanka Trump and Kushner may confront here, where everyone's livelihood seems to be politics....
Will Kushner will really sit in the wooden pews next to Norman Eisen, the former Obama ethics czar who has been railing against Donald Trump’s ethics conflicts and who has publicly questioned his fitness for office?

Will the most powerful first daughter in history occupy the small area on Kesher’s second floor where VIP women, like Hadassah Lieberman, have prayed before her?...

“We have a concept in traditional Judaism of muktseh,” Eisen said in an interview. “Money is muktseh, something forbidden on the Sabbath. Before Shabbat, you take your money, your cell phone, you put it aside. Politics is muktseh. I would welcome them exactly the same as I would any other family that wanted to join our community.”...

Kushner and Ivanka Trump are also old pros at socializing with liberals who dislike the president-elect’s style and substance — so far they have preserved their personal brands and relationships.

I find this article revolting. Do you?

A better site for (Hebrew) Bible texts is the Mamre Institute. The translations are closer to the received Hebrew text.
For example:
http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt1018.htm

@Ben David

I see that also has "buzzing."

I use Bible Gateway because it has a big choice of translations.

That was the only use of "buzz" in the entire Bible... unless you count the one "buzzard."

Just patronizing, really.

How disruptive is it to have them in a synagogue? Is it just a couple of Secret Service guards? Or do they stop traffic and stuff? What about when President Trump comes to the bris or the bar mitzvah?

Let the humble bragging begin amongst the congregants of the synagogue they choose.

One use, unless you add the canon of "Jesus Christ Superstar":

APOSTLES:
What's the buzz? Tell me what's a-happening.
What's the buzz? Tell me what's a-happening.
JESUS:
Why should you want to know?
Don't you mind about the future
Don't you try to think ahead
Save tomorrow for tomorrow;
Think about today instead.

Maybe Jesus' lyrics could be followed by Politico?

President Trump comes to the bris? I want him to perform the bris. With commentary. "It's huuuuuge."

"Next year is Jerusalem" is gonna have real meaning with Trump in office.

That Isaiah guy sure could write well, maybe better than Bob Dylan. And the Word he wrote applies forever. And he even knew about the Mighty Mississippi.

I think Cush is Northern Sudan not modern day Ethiopia. I wonder what "smooth skinned" means? Probably the ancient Hebrews had full beards and these other guys didn't have any facial hair at all.

Don't worry, Politico is on the case.

"Will the most powerful first daughter in history occupy the small area on Kesher’s second floor where VIP women, like Hadassah Lieberman, have prayed before her?"

That is Next year "in Jerusalem"...where our Embassy with its USMC guards stays.

From the King James Version:
Isaiah 18:1-6
Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia:

2 That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!

3 All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a trumpet, hear ye.

4 For so the Lord said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

5 For afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take away and cut down the branches.

6 They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.

I'm still wondering where Obama used to sit while listening raptly to the vile Rev. Wright in his Trinity United Church in Chicago. Not that I expect Politico to dig into a question like that.

The quoted headline has 'Jews buzzing'?

Like insects?

Which buzzing insect?

The industrious bee, the annoying fly or the destructive locust?

Just hits my ear wrong...

WTF? Isn't Trump a vicious anti-Semite? Or is it just the gay Jews that he hates?

Trump is a NYC tolerance-first Scotsman to whom fairness come first. Besides the Jewish Tribe has never done anything except bring great blessings to every society...so great that the Jealousy First factor goes strangely crazy in weak minded people.

Why should we care?

mikee said...

Odd that the presumption is that the presence of the Trumps would somehow cause those already there to behave in an unwelcoming manner. Not all people are so vile. Most leftists, yes, but not all people.

Kyzer SoSay said...

Trump is so anti-Semitic he opened his club in Florida to the previously-shunned Jews, and so racist he welcomed black members as well. No word on whether he allowed illegal immigrants from Syria to join, or extended an arm of friendship to all 29 genders, so we must assume that he didn't and it's because Putin said "nyet".

There really aren't that many Orthodox synagogues in DC. Kesher Israel in Georgetown gets most of the Orthodox politicos because of its location & because it's a congregation that knows how to minister to that community.

The Orthodox communities are out in the suburbs (e.g. in Kemp Mill). Remember, the Orthodox have to walk to temple on the Sabbath. It's hard to build a congregation within walking distance when every house in the neighborhood is $850k or more.

Which buzzing insect?

Locusts. It's biblical.

Liberals aren't; progressives are progressive like cancer; they just can't cope with diversity of opinion or point of view.

It's not a good thing that our presidents are bringing along their families to involve themselves in government policies. I didn't approve of Michelle's school lunch involvement, nor do I approve of Ivanka and her husband having outsized influence.

Ivanka seems a nice girl, but should have no more influence in our government than, say, Sasha Obama.

Except for Attorney General...right?

And you really should check out the families of many of our Congressional representatives....our government is truly returning to a hereditary aristocracy.

"Kushner and Ivanka Trump are also old pros at socializing with liberals," because they are themselves progressives - as are the great majority of monied New York Jews.

The sham of Ivanka's cause célèbre - taxpayer-paid maternity leave, is indeed the tip of the iceberg.

Orthodox Jews are more likely to be conservative.

Jason said...

Yeah, the Orthodox community doesn't vote like secular Jews and the reformed congregations. They are much more friendly to political conservatives.

This is because the Orthodox know who their enemies are NOW, while the secular Jews are still pissed about how their great great grandfather was refused membership by some blue blood Republican at some country club in Connecticut in 1927.

mockturtle said...

And, to my mind, 'Reform' Jews are really 'secular' Jews [at least, the ones I've known].
